Expected appearance of AI at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 event

Apple has officially announced the dates for the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC24), which will be held from June 10 to 14, 2024.

Preliminary information regarding Apple’s 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC24)

Prepare for the tech world’s most anticipated event: Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024! While Apple has remained tight-lipped about specifics, the conference traditionally unveils the next versions of its operating systems. High expectations surround iOS 18, iPadOS 18, tvOS 18, macOS 15, watchOS 11, and potentially a sneak peek at VisionOS 2, all aimed at revolutionizing user experiences across Apple’s ecosystem.

Even though details are limited, Greg “Joz” Joswiak, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Global Marketing, provided a hint about what this significant event holds. Joswiak, an influential figure at Apple since 1986, recently teased followers on X (formerly Twitter), encouraging them to save the date for #WWDC24 and promising an “Absolutely Incredible” experience. Sharp-eyed observers noted the capitalization of “Absolutely Incredible,” suggesting a potential emphasis on Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Rumors abound regarding Apple’s venture into AI, with speculation that the company plans to incorporate advanced AI technologies into its future operating systems. As WWDC draws near, all eyes are on Cupertino to see how Apple will use AI to shape the future of its products and services. It’s an ideal chance to explore what lies ahead for Apple’s AI initiatives.

The applications will incorporate AI technology

Even though Apple’s Siri was once a pioneer in smartphone virtual assistants, it fell behind its competitors in terms of development and effectiveness. However, rumors of a significant AI upgrade planned for 2024 suggest Siri might regain its edge.

The project, internally known as “Ajax”, aims to enhance Siri with chatbot and large language model (LLM) capabilities. This upgrade would allow Siri to understand and respond to user commands more accurately and naturally.

A large language model is an AI program that can comprehend text and generate conversational responses. Unlike Siri, which handles basic iPhone commands, LLMs work with a wider data range, providing deeper insights and more comprehensive answers. LLMs possess billions of parameters and can draw insights from vast data sources.

Furthermore, Siri is set to utilize Apple’s advanced AI technologies, potentially extending its capabilities beyond devices to interact with external services.

AI integration is not limited to Siri. Users can anticipate AI-generated Apple Music playlists similar to Spotify’s, along with new AI tools in XCode for faster app development.

Rumors indicate that Apple will introduce AI integration into the App Store at WWDC24. Ben Reitzes, head of technology research at Melius Research, predicts Apple will establish the foundation for an AI-driven App Store experience, enabling customers to access AI applications from various providers.

Even though iOS 18 is recognized as a significant update, it won’t feature AI similar to ChatGPT, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Gurman suggests a broader focus on AI tools to enhance daily life management, consistent with Apple’s commitment to apps and services.

ChatGPT-like features may not be the main highlight, but Apple might allow developers to build deep synthetic AI systems on iOS. Rumored collaborations with Google and Baidu fuel speculation about Apple’s strategic direction towards democratizing AI capabilities on its platform.

In short, WWDC24 promises a range of AI advancements aimed at enriching user experiences and enhancing interactions with Apple’s ecosystem.

The devices will be integrated with AI technology

Apple appears to be catching up in the realm of AI, driven by a sudden surge in technological advancements. The recent launch of the Apple Watch Series 9, equipped with an improved Neural Engine, signals a notable increase in processing power and capabilities for the device.

While the iPhone remains the key focus for AI integration due to its personal use, there are also anticipated upgrades for iPadOS. However, Apple generally maintains a one-year gap between major feature releases for iOS and iPadOS, suggesting possible improvements in iPadOS 19.

Regarding Macs, the newly released MacBook Air with M3 is notable. Hailed as “the world’s best consumer laptop for AI,” it features a powerful 16-core Neural Engine. Along with macOS features like enhanced camera capabilities, real-time speech-to-text translation, text prediction, image recognition, accessibility improvements, and more, Apple seems committed to integrating AI capabilities into its devices for a more intuitive user experience.

Apple’s AI

Over the years, Apple has become a major player in Machine Learning, the foundation of its AI technology. Machine Learning powers features like Siri’s app suggestions and personalized typing predictions on iPhones, playing a crucial role in enhancing user experiences across Apple’s ecosystem.

Demonstrating its commitment to AI, Apple made a significant acquisition in 2024 – DarwinAI. This startup, based in Waterloo, Ontario, specializes in Explainable AI, a platform that has earned the trust of Fortune 500 companies.

Mark Gurman noted DarwinAI’s expertise in using AI for visual component inspection in various industries, aligning with Apple’s strategic vision for AI integration.

A Bloomberg report provided insight into Apple’s motivation for the acquisition. DarwinAI’s unique ability to streamline AI systems, making them “smaller and faster,” appealed to Apple. As Apple moves towards on-device AI processing, prioritizing speed and safety over cloud-based solutions, DarwinAI’s technology offers a promising path for Apple to achieve its AI development goals while maintaining performance and security across its products.
